Iowa governor signs 6-week abortion ban into law

Iowa governor signs 6-week abortion ban into law

Kim Reynolds (R) on Friday afternoon signed into law the Fetal Heartbeat Bill, which prohibits doctors from performing an abortion after the detection of the baby's heartbeat.

As reported by the Associated Press, Reynolds, a Republican, signed the legislation in her office at the Iowa Capitol, as demonstrators outside shouted "My body, my choice!"

Because an unborn baby's heartbeat is detectable by about six weeks of pregnancy, the bill would prohibit nearly all abortions in Iowa.

"Given that there has been a confirmation of a conservative judge on the Supreme Court, and there are so many Trump nominees to other federal courts, I think the anti-abortion movement really feels emboldened to pursue unconstitutional abortion bans", Shumaker said.

Jeanne Mancini, President of March for Life applauded Reynolds and said the law "will not only save lives", but also "reminds us that abortion stops a beating heart".

"The ACLU of Iowa, along with Planned Parenthood, will not let this risky, unconstitutional law stand", said ACLU's Mark Stringer.

"It's ridiculous that our government can govern women's bodies", she said.

Just before Reynolds signed the bill, the ACLU and an abortion rights groups in the state threatened to sue if the governor did. Reynolds said. "For me, my faith leads me to protect every Iowan, no matter how small".

The Iowa law provides for some exemptions that allow abortions during a later pregnancy stage to save a pregnant woman's life or in some cases of rape and incest.

"We will challenge this law with absolutely everything we have on behalf of our patients, on behalf of your rights, because Iowa will not go back".

"We were outraged, but we weren't actually surprised because since the elections in 2016 we've gotten used to bad news, used to being attacked by shocking, unfathomable, unconscionable attacks", she continued.

But the Supreme Court has previously been hostile to "heartbeat" laws.

Reynolds said in a statement after signing the measure that she expects a legal challenge. "This is about life".

"I believe that all innocent life is precious and sacred, and as governor, I pledged to do everything in my power to protect it".

There was a protest of the bill today at the state capitol, and during this hour of River to River, IPR's Katarina Sostaric and Joyce Russell join guest host Emily Woodbury. "This is bad for Iowa".

In a joint statement Friday morning, Archbishop Michael Jackels of Dubuque and Bishops Thomas Zinkula of Davenport, R. Walker Nickless of Sioux City and Richard Pates of Des Moines called on the judiciary to recognize life.

"This legislation affirms the scientific fact that human life begins at conception", the American Family Association, a pro-life Christian group in MS, said in a statement.

Reaction from around the state and across the country was predictable.

Abortion rights supporters in Iowa and throughout the nation condemned the measure as unconstitutional and an affront to the rights of women.
