Gov. employee in China reported strange sounds, pressure

The US state department has urged its staff in China to alert them to any abnormal hearing or vision issues after one employee reported mystery symptoms.

The State Department says it doesn't know what caused the reported symptoms in Guangzhou, and isn't aware of any other similar cases in China.

In October, a State Department official said the USA had "received a handful of reports from US citizens who report they experienced similar symptoms following stays in Cuba".

The department also warned against attempting to locate the source of any unusual sounds.

The employee experienced the symptoms from late 2017 through April 2018 while on assignment in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, where a USA consulate is located, according to Jinnie Lee, a spokeswoman at the US embassy in Beijing.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Beijing told The Post that the employee reported a variety of symptoms and was sent to the U.S. for evaluation.

"The embassy learned that the clinical findings of this evaluation matched mild traumatic brain injury", Lee said.

"We can not at this time connect it with what happened in Havana, but we are investigating all possibilities", a U.S. embassy official said.

USA officials made no reference to Cuba, where similar reports have been made in relation to two dozen Americans, reports CBS News.

The spokeswoman, Jinnie Lee, said the department is taking the incident "very seriously". "Instead, move to a location where the sounds are not present", recommends the State Department.

China's Foreign Ministry and National Health Commission did not immediately respond to faxed questions about the report.

The victims had associated the onset of their symptoms with "unusual sounds or auditory sensations", a State Department physician told the US Senate in January.

The health alert issued Wednesday warned USA citizens to be vigilant.

Suspected "sonic attacks" affecting more than a dozen USA diplomats and family members in Havana beginning in November 2016 led to the U.S.

The incident prompted the United States previous year to withdraw more than half of its personnel at the embassy in Havana, which reopened in 2015 as the two nations re-established diplomatic relations that had ruptured in 1961. Americans working in Cuba suffered permanent hearing loss, severe headaches, loss of balance, brain swelling, and disruption to cognitive functions.

"The cause (of their symptoms) remains unknown but could be human-made", the Canadian government concluded.

The symptoms included dizziness, headaches and a lack of ability to concentrate.
