Golden Knights edge Capitals in 10

Golden Knights edge Capitals in 10

The Vegas Golden Knights, who at one point held 500-to-1 odds to win the Stanley Cup, are your Western Conference champs in their inaugural season.

The Golden Knights pulled away in the third period, but the Capitals left the ice with the belief they could steal Game 2 at T-Mobile Arena.

The names on the scoresheet for Washington were more noticeable than Vegas' scorers, as Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson and Tom Wilson scored, as did Brett Connolly.

Harper may not have expected the Golden Knights to reach this point, but he at least imagined the possibility that Vegas would face his adopted hometown's Capitals in the finals.

"I think as a whole we can play a lot better", Capitals head coach Barry Trotz said. Washington surrendered two goals following Reaves' tally and now trail 1-0 in the best-of-seven series.

Wilson then delivered a blindside hit on Jonathan Marchessault with the puck nowhere near the Vegas centre, but was only assessed two-minute penalty for interference, while David Perron went off for cross checking in the ensuing scuffle. And in the first period, both teams came to play.

Tomas Nosek scored the game-winner at 9:44 in the third period - and added another with the net empty - when he converted a backdoor pass from Shea Theodore at the side of the net.

In the end, it was an ugly play in a game that was full of them, not just from a missed-calls standpoint. "Like the last game (against the Winnipeg Jets), I went and cleaned the garage".

They received unlikely help from defenseman Deryk Engelland to take a 3-2 lead when Engelland jumped up to start a 3-on-2 rush that led to Smith pounding home an open look in front of Holtby at 3:21 of the second period.

Washington had failed to get beyond the second round of the playoffs in the 20 years since, including Alex Ovechkin's entire career, before beating the Pittsburgh Penguins this spring to qualify for the Eastern Conference final against the Tampa Bay Lightning. We haven't had many games this year where we are the decisive line on the ice and it's not going to happen every single game, but tonight it was fun to help the team offensively. Fleury stops Miller's goal most nights in this postseason, but could not find the puck as it trickled through his legs.

"Yes we have", Knight said when asked if she's caught Knights fever. "I know we have another level to our game".

This, of course, is one of UCF's longest running traditions and one Knight fans believe make them unique.
