Dems use attacks by GOP rivals against Braun

Joe Donnelly (D-IN) this fall, a crucial battle for Senate control.

And no matter which one of our great Republican U.S. Senate candidates you supported during this primary - Mike Braun, Luke Messer and Todd Rokita - it's now time to come together.

"Hoosiers do not look to government first to solve problems", Braun said in his victory speech.

In southeastern Indiana's 6th District, meanwhile, Greg Pence - the brother of Vice President Mike Pence - won the primary for Messer's seat and now is the heavy favorite to win in the overwhelmingly Republican district. Third District Rep. Jim Banks (R), though unopposed, officially earned the nomination to keep his congressional seat Tuesday night. Braun will take on incumbent Democratic Sen.

"I don't think that the folks from the 3rd District, the most conservative, most Republican congressional district in the State of in are ready for that kind of politics", Shine said.

President Trump carried the state by 8 points in the 2016 Presidential Election.

Errol Spears, a 75-year-old retired schoolteacher from Fishers, said he voted for Braun in part because of his business background and for the tone of his campaign. It could also be seen as a win for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who clashed with Blankenship during the campaign.

Donnelly, who is facing his first re-election bid, talked with reporters Wednesday morning, hours after the results were called.

"I thought there was the opportunity to define a different kind of candidacy, one from the outsider business world, the same thing Trump did", he told Reuters ahead of the primary vote on Tuesday.

Braun beat two other major candidates, Reps.

"I've never been afraid of a fight", Donnelly said.

Braun, who is also a former state legislator from Jasper, argued his experience is the closest to Trump because he's an outsider.

Democrats in two in congressional districts say the GOP incumbents - three-term Rep. Jackie Walorski in the 2nd District and Tennessee native and one-term Rep. Trey Hollingsworth in the 9th District - have been absent from the districts and are clueless about what their constituents need.

The National Republican Senate Committee congratulated Mr. Braun, saying the general election will offer a clear contrast between the two candidates.

According to Politico, Braun's effort was powered by almost $6 million of his own money that he either loaned or gave to his campaign.

"When you've got a three-way race that's close, that means you might have two-thirds of the voters and two-thirds of the backers who aren't really sold on the victor even if they sincerely dislike and want to get rid of the incumbent", said Helmke, who directs the Civic Leaders Living-Learning Center at Indiana University in Bloomington. The nasty GOP race buoyed Democratic confidence that Donnelly could survive.
