Danica Patrick fans tweet well-wishes after her Indy 500 crash

Danica Patrick fans tweet well-wishes after her Indy 500 crash

In the last race of her career, Danica Patrick crashed as she came out of Turn 2 in the Indianapolis 500.

The victory capped a flawless month of May for the man from Toowoomba as Power tuned up for the Indy 500 by notching up his 33rd career win with a victory in the Indianapolis Grand Prix run on the Speedway's road circuit. "I had all my people around me, so I was in good spirits".

She won one race with 21 top-10 finishes and three podiums in her 367 races in all circuits.

Will Power took the lead in the Indianapolis 500 with four laps to go, knew he had it won when he took the white flag all alone and spent the final lap yelling to himself as he pulled away from the field. "'I think I am going to win this.' Unbelievable".

"I'm very grateful for everybody and for being able to finish it up like I wanted to", she said.

"I was wondering if I would ever win here", Power said in a post-race interview on ABC.

Still, she is respected and in some cases revered at Indianapolis, where fans still remember her leading the 2009 race before finishing third. "I've had so many wins, so many poles".

He also sprayed it on everyone around him, including his wife, Liz, and the Indy 500 queen Natalie Murdock (her official title is 2018 500 Festival Queen Scholar).

Power took out the 102nd running of IndyCar's flagship race, his first triumph and Team Penske's 17th. It just didn't come on race day.

Will Power can win anything now, even the Indianapolis 500, an intimidating race on an oval he hated because it marginalised his talent. It was a good moment. My career, I've had so many wins, I've had so many poles but everyone talks about the (Indy) 500. Sebastien Bourdais, three-time victor Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan also lost control and wrecked.

Kanaan's crash with 12 laps remaining set up a final restart with Oriol Servia out front.

The temperature at Indianapolis Motor Speedway hit 33 degrees early in the afternoon, equaling the hottest 500 on record. Defending race victor Takuma Sato crashed out just shy of the race's one-quarter mark after tangling with the much slower machine of James Davison.
