Civilian killed by RAF drone in Syria

Civilian killed by RAF drone in Syria

Aircraft of the Royal force in the United Kingdom on 26 March in time to spy on terrorists accidentally shot and killed a civilian who drove into the area on a motorcycle.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) airstrike targeted three ISIS fighters, though a civilian on a motorbike crossed into the strike zone "at the last minute".

The UK has acknowledged a civilian death in the war against ISIS for the first time in the near 4-year worldwide campaign against the terror group.

The military alliance has repeatedly been accused of targeting and killing civilians.

In the first three months of 2018 United Kingdom drones fired as many weapons in Syria as they have done over the previous 18 months.

The Ministry of Defence has previously claimed that there was "no evidence" RAF strikes against ISIS had led to the deaths of civilians.

"Despite the MoD insisting that its drones are primarily for surveillance and intelligence gathering, UK Reaper drones have now fired more weapons in Syria than the UK's dedicated bomber, the Tornado".

It said that RAF has carried out more than 1,600 aerial attacks in Iraq and Syria, second only to the US.

It is the first time the MoD has confirmed a civilian casualty during the UK's campaign against the terror group in Iraq and Syria.

At least 23 civilians, including some ten children, have been killed in suspected US-led airstrikes in the eastern Syrian province of Hasakah yesterday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

A series of evacuation deals have been struck amid intense military offensives.

The statement read "We do everything we can to minimise the risk to civilian life from UK strikes through our rigorous targeting processes and the professionalism of UK Service personnel".

"Thousands of civilians have credibly been reported killed in Coalition actions to defeat so-called Islamic State - and air strikes remain the primary cause of death". A monitoring group, Airwars, documented that between 1,066 and 1,579 civilians died in the nine-month fight for Mosul.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert says the USA will defend its partners if they're attacked.

The UK admission also comes after Middle East Eye revealed a year ago that RAF jets and drones had dropped more than 3,400 bombs and missiles on IS militants in Iraq and Syria, far more than previously openly declared.

"Our forces with the forces of the worldwide coalition have started the last stage" of the anti-ISIS campaign, it said in a statement.

While the U.S. and Australia have admitted causing civilian casualties, the United Kingdom has failed to accept responsibility for a single civilian death in Mosul.
