China enter table tennis team worlds final, survive tough semi

It will be interesting to see a unified Korea team take on neighbours Japan, in a high-intensity semifinal. The two Koreas joined forces on Thursday ahead of an elite eight match that would pit them against each other after accepting the proposal from the International Table Tennis Federation.

History has been made in Halmstad, Sweden, with North and South Korea announcing a Unified Korea team to continue competing at the Liebherr 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships.

The three-woman team - two players from the south, one from the north - lost to Japan 3-0 in the semi-finals but secured the bronze medal since the event had no third-place game.

Kim Song-i, victor of a bronze medal for North Korea at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, said: "I also saw this video and I was surprised about the power of the united team".

International Table Tennis Federation president Thomas Weikert underlined the significance of the decision.

Defending champion China on Friday survived the toughest battle they met since the start of the 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships here.

Throughout a historic summit in April, both North and South agreed to hold discussions over denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula and bring a formal decision to the Korean War, which ended in armistice. Sports is indeed a great leveler and the unified team for table tennis is in keeping with the sentiments expressed by Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in during their meeting. Instead of matches, the players from each nation smiled and stood together on court. Often called "Ping-Pong diplomacy", the games paved the way for Nixon to become the first American president to visit the People's Republic of China and begin to thaw relations between the two countries.

The two countries marched together again at this year's Pyeonchang Olympics, and the women's hockey team at the games featured players from both sides of the border.
