Brexit: Government faces 7th defeat in parliament

Sir Keir Starmer, the shadow Brexit Secretary, urged Mrs May to accept the amendment, adding: "Under no circumstances can the Prime Minister be given a blank cheque to crash the United Kingdom out of the European Union without a deal".

"We have always been clear that the vote must be truly meaningful".

Former deputy prime minister Lord Heseltine and ex-ministers Lord Patten of Barnes and Lord Willetts were among 19 Tory rebels.

But Labour said the vote marked a "hugely significant moment" in the fight to ensure Parliament has a "proper role" in the Brexit negotiations and a no-deal situation was avoided. "It would bring back control to Parliament". It's chose to take up the banner of "peers against the people".

He said: "Even the House of Lords last night rejected on a vote having another referendum". It is not acceptable for an unelected house to try to block the democratic will of the British people.

"It is doing its best with a series of amendments - and the one today is particularly important - to stop the referendum result coming into law".

Speaking ahead of Barnier visiting both sides of the Irish border, Foster told the BBC: "Michel Barnier's trying to present himself as someone who cares deeply about Northern Ireland and if that is the case he needs to hear the fact that we are part of the United Kingdom (and) will remain part of the United Kingdom constitutionally, politically and economically".

The Brexit Secretary has again played down the prospect of a breakthrough on the Irish border issue by the time of an European Union summit next month.

"Therefore his proposal of us being in an all-Ireland regulatory scenario with a border down the Irish Sea simply does not work".

The House of Lords has voted for an amendment to the Brexit withdrawal bill which would give parliament the final decision on what Theresa May should do if the deal she brings back from Brussels is rejected.

The Government warned giving MPs a decisive final say on the terms of the Brexit deal would weaken the Prime Minister's hand in negotiations.

"As for individual amendments, we have said we will look at those and discuss those in due course", the spokesman said, adding that if the government's hands were tied in the talks, "that's not something we believe is in the UK's interest".
