Astronomers have discovered the fastest growing black hole ever

Astronomers have discovered the fastest growing black hole ever

With giant new ground-based telescopes now under construction, scientists will also be able to use bright, distant objects like this voracious black hole to measure the universe's expansion, the researchers said.

Finding a black hole that eats the same amount of mass as our Sun every two days and shines thousands of times brighter than whole galaxies.that's just insane.

He said if the black hole were at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy it would appear 10 times brighter than a full moon.

Researchers said this particular black hole likely released its light about 12 billion years ago, when the phenomenon was about the size of 20 billion suns and was growing by one per cent every million years. "We want to get a complete picture of the demographics of fast-growing supermassive black holes in the universe, and see just how big is the problem which we have to solve".

But it wouldn't much matter, since the oodles of x-rays emanating from this great void would probably make life on Earth impossible.

'It would appear as an incredible bright pin-point star that would nearly wash out all of the stars in the sky'. So if Wolf is right, this insane black hole is sending out an nearly incomprehensible amount of sterilizing radiation that essentially renders an entire corner of the cosmos inhospitable to life as we know it.

"This black hole is growing so fast that it shines thousands of times brighter than the rest of the galaxy".

The discovery of this massive black hole calls the existing science about black holes into question. "So this means it's far, far away in another galaxy and it will never drift and come over here", he said.

Wolf added that distant black holes like this one can help scientists study the early universe.

What's making astronomers so curious is that the black hole they saw was in the early days of the universe and they're wondering how it grew so large.

A black hole is an object with such overwhelmingly powerful gravity that not even particles of light can escape. They are also useful as bright reference points for Global Positioning System and space navigation, and could provide the most sensitive measurements of the rate of expansion. Improved technology on ground-based telescopes coming online over the next decade will also be able to directly measure the expansion of the universe using the very bright black holes.

In a paper due to appear in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, the ANU team explained that they spotted the fast-growing quasar by combining motion data from the European Space Agency's Gaia satellite with photometry from the SkyMapper and NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE).
