White House: Jackson allegations not backed up by records

White House: Jackson allegations not backed up by records

The president is enraged over Tester's work documenting allegations of malfeasance by Rear Adm. Ronny Jackson, which quickly unraveled Jackson's nomination to be VA secretary and marks a turning point in the relationship between the moderate Democrat and Trump. If they had any merit, I would not have been selected, promoted and entrusted to serve in such a sensitive and important role as physician to three presidents over the past 12 years.

The allegations were publicly released on the day that Jackson's confirmation hearing was to have been held. Yet even as Jackson strongly denied the charges against him, calling them "completely false and fabricated" in a defiant statement, his position as Trump's chief physician and a pending Navy promotion looked shaky.

Jackson also faced a series of accusations about his workplace conduct.

The Secret Service statement went on to say, "Rear Admiral Jackson, in his role as the official White House Physician, has provided years of dedicated support to the men and women of the Secret Service, often miles from home and under hard travel conditions, in order to ensure our personnel are healthy and prepared to execute our critical mission".

Trump had already singled out Senator Jon Tester, the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Veterans' Affairs committee, who is up for re-election in November in Montana. At his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump as president-elect interviewed several potential candidates, who either turned him down or were passed over.

"He has received more vetting than most nominees", she said. Jon Tester of Montana, the committee's ranking Democrat, for unfairly maligning Jackson and said voters in his state should make him pay a price. "Tester should resign", Trump tweeted on Saturday.

Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia, chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee, said Thursday he would "work with the administration to see to it we get a VA secretary for our veterans and their families". Reuters also reviewed two years of audits of the White House medical unit pharmacy, which did not show any major issues.

"He would have done a great job, he has a tremendous heart", Trump said.

Tester faces a tough race in November - his Republican challenger will be determined by a June primary - in a state where Mr. Trump enjoys a 52 percent approval rating as of January, according to Gallup. He said they came from almost two dozen current and former military service members who'd worked with Jackson. The agency said it has found "no information that would indicate the allegation is accurate" and no record of any incident involving Jackson.

Dan Caldwell, executive director of the conservative Concerned Veterans for America, urged the White House to take more time "to carefully select and vet a new nominee" who could head VA.
