Vatican tamps down report that Pope Francis denies existence of hell

According to Scalfari's article in Thursday's La Repubblica, he asked the Pope where "bad souls" go and where they are punished.

It was reported he argued that unrepentant souls will simply disappear, going unpunished.

And that is probably just how the Pope is feeling right now, after the Vatican was forced to issue a statement refuting claims that he'd abolished hell.

The Vatican said the Pope did not grant him an interview and the article "was the fruit of his reconstruction" not a "faithful transcription of the Holy Father's words".

Pope Francis urged inmates at a Rome prison on Thursday to never let their hopes be clouded like cataracts cloud the eyes - and revealed that he suffers from the condition and has to have surgery for it next year.

Megyn Kelly recently sat down for an interview with Bishop Carlton Pearson, a former Pentecostal preacher who was excommunicated from his belief system for changing his perspective on the concept of hell. Francis has in the past spoke frequently about the devil and hell, in keeping with Catholic teaching.

Now, Netflix has picked a up a film titled Come Sunday, which is a biographical drama of Pearson's life at that time.

Pope Francis presides over the Via Crucis procession as part of celebrating Good Friday.

At the start of the most solemn period of the Catholic Church calendar, Francis lay prostrate in front of the altar in St Peter's Basilica before the chant-filled Good Friday evening service got underway.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "immediately after death, the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, 'eternal fire'".

In fact, the news agency reported that this is the second time on the same topic that Scalfari has "misrepresented the Pope's words following a private audience".

On other occasions too, the Vatican has had to issue clarifications after meetings with Mr Scalfari - who reportedly reconstructs dialogue from memory without taking notes or using a recorder.

"Souls are not punished", the Pope replied as quoted in the daily.

It also speaks of "eternal fire" and teaches "the chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God".

Scalfari's version of the conversation isn't quite how the Vatican remembers it, however. Almost half a dozen times since Francis's election, have we been treated to a round of Scalfarism, the circuit of which is predictable enough, but each time more pernicious in its effect.
