Uber Testing New 911 Service In Denver

In a FTC press release, the agency said the breach - which was not revealed until November 2017 - occurred in the fall of 2016 and was the result of "lax security choices Uber made in its use of the third-party cloud storage service". Because of that secondary breach and Uber's misconduct around it, the FTC has revised its original settlement for a 2014 incident to include a few more provisions, including civil penalties should the company fail to notify the FTC in the event of future breaches.

Khosrowshahi says Uber is also reviewing its safety practices from driver training to software.

The signal sends the rider's location and trip details directly to dispatchers.

"Technology can make travel safer than ever before", Khosrowshahi said.

Uber has also faced criticism over drivers sexually assaulting female passengers, including a 2016 case involving a woman who said she was assaulted by a driver who'd taken her to her hotel.

"We are about mobility-making mobility available to everyone, everywhere", Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said at a public appearance Wednesday, according to Reuters.

Finally, Uber will begin to more thoroughly vet its drivers around the world by "proactively rerun [ning] criminal and motor vehicle checks, regardless of whether there is a legal obligation to do so".

Uber has agreed to an expanded settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over claims that the ride-hailing company deceived customers about how it handled their data.

Under the terms of the new agreement, Uber has to disclose any future data breaches to the FTC or risk fines.

Even more strikingly, that private information was exposed in the exact same way as the earlier 2014 screwup that the FTC was digging into: data stored on Amazon Web Services S3 cloud servers was accessed using a key that an Uber engineer had somehow made public on GitHub. "The strengthened provisions of the expanded settlement are created to ensure that Uber does not engage in similar misconduct in the future".
