U.S. and France deny involvement in Syrian missile strikes which killed 14

Russian Federation said two Israeli F-15 jets launched eight guided rockets from Lebanese airspace, targeting T4 air base in Homs before Syrian air defenses managed to shoot down several of the rockets.

The airstrikes come a day after a suspected chemical attack in Douma, a rebel-held area near Damascus, over the weekend.

The U.N. Commission of Inquiry on Syria found in September that Syrian government warplanes dropped a sarin bomb in that attack and that Syrian government forces have carried out more than two dozen chemical attacks in the course of the country's civil war.

Syria denies ever using chemical weapons during the war and says it eliminated its chemical arsenal under a 2013 agreement brokered by the USA and Russian Federation.

On Monday, at least 14 members of the Syrian regime army and its allies were killed in a missile attack on the T-4 military base in Homs province, which came after an alleged chemical attack in eastern Ghouta's Douma that killed over 70 civilians.

"At this time, the Department of Defense is not conducting air strikes in Syria", Pentagon spokesmanChristopher Sherwood said in statement.

A military spokeswoman for Israel, which on occasions in the past has struck targets inside Syria, declined to comment on explosions at T4. While the worldwide officials were trying to confirm the chemical attack that took place on Saturday, Trump was seen slamming Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Russia's UN ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, urged inspectors from the watchdog agency to fly to Syria's capital today and visit the site in a nearby rebel-held town.He denied any attack occurred, telling the UN Security Council that experts from Russia's military radiological, biological and chemical unit went to the site and found no chemical substances on the ground, no dead, and no poisoned people in hospitals.

Israel sent fighter jets into Syria to down an Iranian drone that took off from there in February.

The U.S. president later conferred with French President Emmanuel Macron, and they agreed on the need for a "firm response" to the attack, Macron's office said. The alleged attack in Douma occurred Saturday night amid a resumed offensive by Syrian government forces after the collapse of a truce.

The attack demonstrated the multi-faceted nature of the Syria conflict, which started in March 2011 as an uprising against Assad and now involves several countries and various insurgent groups in a web of alliances.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the strike on the T-4 base was a unsafe development.

On Sunday, an operation was launched to evacuate militants from the Jaysh al-Islam group, their families and civilians held hostage by them from the city of Douma (a Damascus suburb).

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said it had opened an investigation to determine what exactly had happened in Douma.

"These heinous actions by the Bashar al-Assad regime are a outcome of the past administration's weakness and irresolution...."

However Trump laid the blame firmly at the feet of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and his chief backers, echoing similar statements from the European Union and Turkey.
