Turkey Expects Vladimir Putin

Turkey Expects Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin, on his first foreign visit since being re-elected on March 18, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan remotely gave the go-ahead for the construction of the Russian-built nuclear plant on the Mediterranean coast at Akkuyu.

Prior to the groundbreaking ceremony, Erdogan welcomed Putin with an official ceremony in the capital.

"We made an agreement about the S-400s (with Russia) and this issue is now closed", he said.

Erdogan said that Turkish energy sector - which is still predominantly based on petroleum, natural gas and coal- would be healthier along with the Akkuyu NPP, Anadolu Agency reports.

President Putin said during the visit that the implementation of the contract for the delivery of the S-400 was a priority in the military-technical cooperation between Russian Federation and Turkey.

In December Russia says it has completed negotiations with Turkey for the sale of an S-400 air defence missile system, with delivery scheduled for late 2019.

The three countries are sponsoring a series of efforts in a bid to end the seven-year war.

Today, the presidents of Russia, Iran and Turkey will convene in Ankara to continue discussing the May 2017 Astana model devised to bring peace to a warring Syria.

For his part, Putin said Russian Federation was a leading country in the nuclear energy sector.

"This innovative project is highly valuable and important".

At present, there are 450 nuclear power plants in 31 countries, while 55 plants are under construction around the world. "This marks a new stage in the development of Turkey's economy".

He pointed out that the nuclear power plant would enhance Turkey's potential in science and technology and provide Turkish consumers with clean and low-priced electricity.

Last month, sources familiar with the matter said Akkuyu was likely to miss its 2023 target start-up date, but Rosatom, which is looking for local partners to take a 49 percent stake in the project, said it is committed to the timetable.

He highlighted that Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant would be a symbol of the Turkish-Russian friendship.

On November 24, 2015 a Turkish military jet blasts a Russian warplane out of the sky over the Turkey-Syria border.

Turkey's Energy Minister Berat Albayrak, Erdogan's son-in-law, praised the Akkuyu project saying: "We are standing at a crucial juncture in realising the 63-year dream".
