Synthetic marijuana leads to death of IL resident

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is warning people about the dangers of synthetic cannabinoids, often called fake weed, K2, and spice, after six people who used synthetic cannabinoids suffered severe bleeding.

All of those 38 cases have required hospitalization.

There are now cases in at least eight Chicago-area communities including Cook County, Dupage County, Kane County, McLean County, Peoria County, Tazewell County and Will County. "Despite the perception that synthetic cannabinoids are a safe alternative to marijuana, they can cause very severe illness".

The director of toxicology for the NorthShore University HealthSystem tells NBC Chicago the tainted synthetic pot-which is typically made of hundreds of chemicals-could contain some sort of blood thinner or anticoagulant.

Anyone with a negative reaction should call 911 immediately.

"Synthetic cannabinoids are unsafe".

Shah says they're unsafe because it's hard to know what chemicals they contain or what an individual's reaction will be. The symptoms have included patients coughing up blood, blood in the urine, a severe bloody nose, or bleeding gums. Women who are menstruating have also experienced a higher than average flow.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the IDPH said symptoms have included bleeding from the eyes and ears but those affected in IL have reported other symptoms.

The bleeding that doctors have seen in recent days has been severe.

To date, IDPH has received 38 reports of people in the Chicago area and central IL who have experienced severe bleeding after using synthetic cannabinoids.

The IDPH continues to investigate to try to identify any common products and determine where they were obtained. The end product can be packaged for smoking or converted to a liquid for use in e-cigarettes or similar devices.

While patients visiting emergency rooms with symptoms of bleeding is relatively new, a report from Forbes noted synthetic pot products have previously been linked to intense anxiety, paranoia, seizures, psychosis, and confusion.
