Synthetic Cannabinoids pose great health risks

Synthetic Cannabinoids pose great health risks

It is a human-made chemical that is sprayed on dried plant materials and meant to be smoked or vaped.

Three people in IL have died after experiencing severe bleeding linked to use of synthetic marijuana, health officials say, and a chemical used in rat poison has been detected in at least one of those cases.

Synthetic marijuana, also known as fake weed, is sold for recreational use under the names K2, Spice, Black Mamba, Bombay Blue, Genie and Zohai, among others. The users were hospitalized - and two of them died - after coughing up blood, finding blood in their urine or bleeding from their noses or gums, officials said.

Nine of the cases have tested positive for brodifacoum, a lethal anticoagulant used in rat poison.

"Each day we've seen the number of cases rise", said director of the IDPH Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. "We strongly urge everyone to not use synthetic cannabinoids". "They are not regulated, and people don't know what chemicals may be in them, like rat poison", he said in a statement.

There are also state laws and local ordinances that make synthetic drugs illegal, but that doesn't mean there's no chance someone in the county might get a hold of them, Stenger said.

Their state health department reports that at least 9-5 people statewide are becoming sick since early March soon after eating synthetic bud.

Both have been cited in a recent wave of synthetic marijuana deaths in IL.

Officials say the chemicals can be "unpredictable, harmful and deadly".

The federal and state governments have taken action against synthetic marijuana and other drugs by banning chemical compounds used to manufacture the products.

What the state health department says it's struggling with most is getting potential users information on how unsafe these drugs can be.

The CDC has concurred that the use of synthetic cannabinoids can lead to serious illness or death.

Friday's updated number includes two deaths and is up from 56 cases reported Monday.

If you experience any symptoms, call 911 or have someone drive you to a hospital emergency department immediately, Foley and Sparkman said.
