Strikes hit Syria as country had 'chance for peaceful future': Moscow

Zakharova suggested that Western media bore some responsibility for the strikes, claiming the White House cited "multiple media sources" on the suspected chemical weapons attack in Douma.

Western powers are thought to be preparing for strikes but Syria's ally Russian Federation opposes such action, the BBC reported on Friday.

Around 30 missiles were fired in the attack, and a third of them were shot down, the official said.

Western powers continued to weigh their options on Friday over possible strikes against Syria's regime as pressure built to avoid an escalation following a warning from Russian Federation that military action could lead to "war". The medics, however, said none of the patients had any symptoms of chemical poisoning, according to the statements.

During a phone call late on Thursday, UK Prime Minister Theresa May and US President Donald Trump agreed on the need to deter chemical weapon use in Syria.

"Our president has not yet made a decision about possible action in Syria".

Vassily Nebenzia, Moscow's UN ambassador, said he "cannot exclude" war between the United States and Russian Federation.

Asked if he was referring to a war between the United States and Russian Federation, he told reporters: "We can not exclude any possibilities unfortunately because we saw messages that are coming from Washington". It cited the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Monday: Nebenzia told the U.N. Security Council "there was no chemical attack" over the previous weekend. "We can not take such risks", he said at a forum. He added that Washington seems determined to take military action in Syria and this is unsafe.

'We can not allow the use of chemical weapons to become normalised - within Syria, on the streets of the United Kingdom, or anywhere else in our world.

Russia's military says Britain was behind the alleged April 7 chemical attack that killed dozens of Syrians in a rebel-held suburb of Damascus.

Russia's Ministry of Defense said it believed the action by the US, UK and France was not in retaliation to the alleged chemical attack in Douma but instead was a reaction to the "success" of the Syrian army in liberating its territory from rebels.

Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, on Friday accused Russian Federation of lies and covering up for Assad, which she said had used chemical weapons at least 50 times in the past seven years of warfare.

Facing a stark choice between engaging the United States, Britain and France in combat or passively watching them strike his ally, President Vladimir Putin has opted for the peaceful route.

"Without the sanction of the UN Security Council, in breach of the UN charter and the norms and principles of global law, an act of aggression was committed against a sovereign state", the Kremlin said.
