Solo: A Star Wars Story to premiere at Cannes Film Festival

Solo: A Star Wars Story to premiere at Cannes Film Festival

PARIS-The Cannes film festival will open next month with Iranian master Asghar Farhadi's new film "Everybody Knows", starring Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, the organisers said Thursday. Entertainment Weekly has additional details about the film festival's ties to the franchise and Star Wars creator George Lucas.

Solo: A Star Wars Story opens nationwide on May 25th. Solo opens in the USA on May 25.

The screening of Solo marks the latest connection between Star Wars and Cannes, which played a key role in the blockbuster sci-fi saga's evolution. The psychological thriller shot in Spanish will also compete for the Palme d'Or - the first time in six years that an opening film will be in the running for the festival's top prize. Two of the prequels - 2002's Attack of the Clones and 2005's Revenge of the Sith - played at the French Riviera festival.

Cate Blanchett will preside over the jury of this year's Cannes festival.

The film, which tells the tale of the young smuggler Han Solo, will definitely have a preview showing at Cannes.

The film's director, Ron Howard, is expected to attend the festival, along with the cast members Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke, among others.

Star Wars is about to get one of its iconic characters Hans Solo's origin movie, directed by Ron Howard. Much like the first Star Wars standalone film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, released in 2016, Solo has had some production issues-to the point when Lucasfilm fired the film's original directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, for "creative differences".
