Rock Hall inductions correct long-time snubs

Along with Bon Jovi (the band), the Cars, Dire Straits and the Moody Blues have always been considered Rock Hall slights.

If there was a theme to the 33rd annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions ceremony, held Saturday night at Public Auditorium here, it was, "It's about time". "It took a lot of people to get us here tonight", he said. "We weren't really there to be cool".

Guitarist Richie Sambora reunited with singer Jon Bon Jovi on stage as the group, that got their start in New Jersey in the early 1980s, played stadium hits Shot Through The Heart, It's My Life and Livin' On A Prayer to cheering fans.

Simone's brother, Sam Waymon, accepted the honor on his sister's behalf.

The ceremony's weird refusal to recognize Dire Straits seemingly sprang from Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler's weird refusal to recognize the ceremony. Instead, bassist John Illsley, alongside keyboardists Alan Clark and Guy Fletcher, inducted themselves into the Rock Hall.

The Cars gave an awesome showing of "I Guess You're Just What I Needed".

Soul singer Nina Simone, who raised awareness with a dazzling voice during the civil rights movement, is rock and roll royalty. However, he wound up playing a much bigger role in the show than expected, as The Killers opened the ceremony with an un-scheduled performance of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "American Girl" (complete with "Free Fallin'" vocal quotes) in honor of the recently-departed rock legend, who himself was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Lauryn Hill surprised attendees in joining Andra Day and The Roots in tribute to Nina Simone.

Rock Hall President and CEO Greg Harris also announced a $10 million donation from the Key Bank Foundation, the largest-ever single philanthropic contribution to the Hall, which will be detailed later this spring.
