Moscow court blocks use of Telegram messaging app

Moscow court blocks use of Telegram messaging app

A court in Russian Federation ruled yesterday to block the popular messaging app Telegram in the country, after it refused to give state security services access to private conversations.

As various local news outlets report, the decision by the Tagansky District Court in Moscow means that the Kremlin's internet monitoring organization Roskomnadzor will now force domestic ISPs to block access to Telegram "in the near future".

Roskomnadzor had threatened to ban the app in June previous year for failing to join its official register, which requires companies to provide the FSB with information on user interactions. He added that FSB's demand that his client must provide access to private conversations of users is not only unconstitutional but baseless and can not be fulfilled technically and legally.

The ruling comes a week after state communications regulator Roskomnadzor filed a lawsuit aimed at limiting access to the app within the country.

A POPULAR Russian messaging app utilized by ISIS terrorists has been blocked by a Russian courtroom following requires by authorities to share its encryption information.

Telegram, which has more than 200 million users worldwide, is especially popular with Russia's elite. "Telegram will be more hard to shut as it's highly popular and offers users means to bypass blocking".

"There is a certain legislation that demands certain data to be passed to certain services of the Russian Federation", he said. Telegram has repeatedly refused to comply, citing user privacy concerns. Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram Messenger, has confirmed that his company will not create a backchannel for government authorities to snoop on user messages.

Russian Federation and Telegram have been going at it for the past couple of months, and now it's getting ugly.

"At Telegram, we have the luxury of not caring about revenue streams or ad sales", Durov, a Russian who fled the country in 2014, wrote.

Third-party VPN/Proxy-might be overloaded, which is likely to result in slow operation during the first hours after the block.

Telegram's Pavel Duriv had this to say. An irony not lost on officials is that they too use Telegram for communication purposes, and that includes President Putin's own press office.
