Macron Says He Has Proof Of Syria 'Chemical Attack'

President Emmanuel Macron of France has said he has "proof" that the Syrian government carried out chemical weapons attack on Douma.

France is expected to join the United States and Britain in carrying out air strikes in response to the use of the weapons but it remains unclear if it will definitely happen and if so, when.

Macron said on Thursday that he has "evidence" that the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons.

Moscow, which offers military support to the Syrian regime, has warned of a possible Russian response to a USA attack.

Speaking from the White House, the commander-in-chief of the United States said the strikes pummeled targets associated with Assad's chemical weapons capabilities.

"We have proof that chemical weapons were used last week, at least chlorine, and that they were used by the regime of Bashar al-Assad", Macron said during an interview on France's TF1 television, reports AFP.

"We will need to take decisions in due course, when we judge it most useful and effective", Macron said.

He said: "The position is very clear, Macron stated some months ago that the use of chemical weapons would be a red line which if crossed would entail a French military response".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday that her country would not join a military operation in Syria. His post indicated that missiles would be coming.

Stoltenberg said in a statement that Syria's use of chemical weapons was "a clear breach of global norms and agreements". His comments echoed those of President Donald Trump, who earlier Thursday added doubts about suggestions that a USA attack was on a fast track.

"We call upon.members of the worldwide community to seriously consider the possible consequences of such accusations, threats and especially action [against Syria]", said Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
