Larry Harvey, Burning Man founder, dies at 70

The gathering has grown to about 70,000 people in Nevada's Black Rock Desert and a "Vitruvian Man" figure a year ago stood at 70 feet tall.

The report said that on April 4, Harvey suffered a massive stroke which has failed to recover. We resolutely held out for a miracle.

"Larry was a visionary, a mentor, a philosopher, and a passionate advocate for Burning Man's culture and principles", a statement on the website said.

Harvey, alongside co-founder John Law, began Burning Man in 1986 on Baker Beach in San Francisco. At the center of this temporary but virtual metropolis is the Burning Man itself, a 40-foot-tall wooden structure outlined in neon and stuffed with fireworks that's set afire in the festival's climax.

Burning Man represents utopian ideals about society and consumerism, and Harvey outlined them in the 10 Principles of Burning Man.

"As he told one of us recently, Larry liked to create "scenes" that made people consider the world in a new way".

The event quickly grew and moved to a remote location in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, about a two-hour drive north of Reno.

"Unlike art festivals of the past, in which attendees would pay a fee to observe creations, the Burning Man festival promoted itself from the beginning as an inclusive event with 'No Spectators".

Tens of thousands of people attend the event in the Black Rock Desert. "He was 100% authentic to his core", praised his long-time friend and Burning Man CEO, Marion Goodell, on the organization's website. He also leaves behind "a global community of devoted Burning Man participants inspired by his vision to build a more creative, cooperative and generous world", Mangrum said.

Although known for retaining its joyful celebrative atmosphere as it grew from a small gathering to one of big proportions, Burning Man occasionally had its problems. In 2007, a man was charged with arson after setting the Burning Man ablaze four days early. In 1996, a man died after his motorcycle crashed into a van of festival-goers, and three others were injured in a separate incident involving a drunk driver, the AP reports.

He is survived by his son Tristan Harvey; brother Stewart Harvey; and nephew Bryan Harvey.
