Kevin Durant Will Reportedly Restructure Contract With Warriors

Kevin Durant Will Reportedly Restructure Contract With Warriors

The Golden State Warriors superstar plans to opt out of his contract this summer before restructure his deal in order to remain with the team, ESPN's Chris Haynes reported Wednesday, citing National Basketball Association sources.

Kevin Durant is reportedly going to hit the open market this summer. The Warriors shelled out cash for Durant, but not as much as one would expect-he accepted a two-year, $51.25 million deal, though he clearly could have garnered a max contract elsewhere.

After winning his first championship, Durant turned down a $27.7 million player option to become an unrestricted free agent with the intention of re-signing with the Warriors for $10 million less.

By making less money than a player of his level, Durant enabled the Warriors to keep players like Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston on their roster.

Durant, 29, spent his first nine seasons with the Seattle SuperSonics/Oklahoma City Thunder franchise before signing a free-agent deal with Golden State in July 2016.

"Financially, obviously, what I wanted to do a year ago, it made sense", Durant told the Athletic in March. The disappointment culminated in a 119-79 loss to the Utah Jazz in the Warriors' final game of the regular season.

This raises the question why they would feel this way, Durant was the Finals MVP a year ago, outplaying Curry and possibly LeBron James. Other possibilities include signing two- or three-year deals that would contain player options the year before they're set to expire. "But I'm enjoying every moment of it, so I'm not trying to look too far down the line", Durant said.

If you're a fan of a team that isn't the Warriors and your hope is that this means your team can sell Durant and leaving the bay area, I have some bad news. He ends the campaign with an average of 26.4 points, 5.4 assists and 6.8 rebounds per game.

The reigning NBA Finals MVP won his first title with Warriors a year ago.

He can agree to a three-year deal with a player option after the second season.
