Isner fights back to lift Miami title

Isner fights back to lift Miami title

The 14th-seeded Isner recorded 13 aces in the one-hour, 22-minute match while halting the red-hot del Potro's 15-match winning streak. "Very happy it's all sort of coming together right now", Isner said.

"So that was certainly a big advantage for me".

"I tried to be more aggressive", Zverev said to ATP's official website. Neither had flawless starts to the season, indeed Isner had just two match wins to his name when he arrived in Florida. When you're that confident, even when you're super, super exhausted, you still find a way to win.

The second set was a tight affair, going into the ninth game with the match delicately poised at 4-4. "He was too good for me", Del Potro said. He is playing the best tennis of his life so it is going to be great. I don't have any skills for that.

When Isner meets up with Alexander Zverev for the title on Stadium Court at the Crandon Tennis Center on Key Biscayne at 1 p.m. Sunday, he is hoping to launch some of those overpowering serves at Zverev. Zverev defeated Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets 7-6, 6-2. He has a 3-0 edge on Isner, but their past two matches have been three-setters, including last year's three-tiebreaker affair in the fourth round of this tournament.

Zverev was broken for a second time at 4-4 when he dumped the ball into the net and Isner held his nerve to clinch the title with an ace. There is no Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic standing in the way of getting their hands on the title - two players that have totally dominated this event over the years.

John Isner produced a ruthless display during his semi-final victory against Juan Martin del Potro and underlined his undoubted power with a lightning forehand victor.

"I was just ready for this moment", Isner said in a TV interview just after the match ended.

Isner will hope to keep Zverev at bay with his serve and build the match from there. "I played bad from the baseline, but it's not easy against John. Look, if I'm returning well and getting in return games, that should bode well for me, given how I serve", Isner told reporters after the victory. Playing in a pressure situation, even though it's doubles, I think that helped a lot.

"But with my coach, David Macpherson and I, when I first got to Miami, we have been having dinner every night and talking some things over". Despite that, the two have always been put on a display of high-quality tennis, with their match in Miami previous year the most entertaining. And at 6-4, with Carreno Busta serving, Zverev forced his opponent into a forehand error.

The young German star will start the final as the favorite given his 3-0 head-to-head recover over Isner.

Despite their age differences - Isner is 32, Zverev 20 - both players are very familiar with each other's game, with Zverev being exposed to Isner's practices at Saddlebrook Academy in Tampa, Florida, where his older brother, Mischa, trained. "I made some winners; made some backhand winners finally in the match and found my rhythm".
