How Parkland students feel about their clear backpacks

How Parkland students feel about their clear backpacks

Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School returned from Spring Break yesterday only to be greeted with a few new school safety measures.

Broward County Public Schools announced on March 21 that students would be required to use clear backpacks as a safety measure.

Not all students are fans of the change.

Sarah Chadwick, one of the students who led the #NeverAgain movement, tweeted: "Tomorrow we will have to go through security checkpoints and be given clear backpacks, my school is starting to feel like a prison", she wrote.

Some posed very legitimate questions, with student Kyra Parrow tweeting: "Ok but how are clear backpacks going to protect douglas kids from an AR-15", while others outwardly mocked the new mandatory rule: "Now I can't pretend to look for my homework when I really don't have it". Now police officers and security guards are stationed around campus, monitoring all entry points and checking students' bags.

"We need real change", she painted on the front of the bag.

She said those personal accounts are important, but she recognizes not all of them will be covered by the media.

"I definitely feel safer, but in no way is school going to be a place of cognitive education and creativity when it feels like a jail cell", he said.

A photo of Carmen Lo was widely shared, showing the senior with a sign inside her clear backpack that read: "This backpack is probably worth more than MY LIFE".

Additional security personnel will also be present on the Parkland, Fla., campus, and the school district is considering metal detectors, Runcie said at the time.

Requiring students to wear clear bags to school isn't uncommon and the rule has been enforced in quite a few schools across the United States in response to youth bringing weapons such as guns and knives to class.

"Having clear backpacks not only make us feel uncomfortable but it also is not the solution to end school shootings and make our school safer", student Kali Clougherty said.

And since the rule went into effect on Monday - nearly two months after a former student sneaked an AR-15 onto campus in a rifle bag and used it to kill 17 people - students have complained that the policy is unnecessary and intrusive.

But safety may come at the cost of a productive school environment, he said. "They get a rifle and put it in a musical instrument case".
