First One-Handed Player Signed to US NFL Pro Franchise

First One-Handed Player Signed to US NFL Pro Franchise

The moment was an especially emotional one for Griffin and his family, as the UCF linebacker will now be teammates with his twin brother Shaquil, who also plays for Seattle. 'Oh, he has one hand-how can you play football?' Well, what if I say, 'You have two hands, how can you play football?' At the end of the day, you have to show what you can do.

"But I wasn't too anxious about where I was going or when I was going", he added.

Shaquem Griffin was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Shaquill was drafted last season and played well as a rookie, racking up 59 tackles along with a sack and an interception. And they continued throughout this whole process to let me know how much they loved my brother, how much they loved my family.

"I was (heading to) the restroom and my brother came and tackled me with my self phone and said, 'Answer it, answer it!' And I looked and that's when tears started pouring down right then and there", Griffin said, laughing. Shaquill picked up Shaquem's - who was in the bathroom - cellphone and immediately recognized the Seattle area code. If you want me to cover, I will cover and I'm going to give you everything I got.

"It's insane because that process is tough to see all those guys before you", said Griffin, who ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash and bench-pressed 225 pounds 20 times at the NFL Combine in February.

Griffin was born with a congenital birth defect that ultimately affected his ability to use his left hand. Shaquem competed in track and field, winning the state title in the triple jump in 2013, and the brothers chose UCF over offers from numerous FBS schools. "He is as fast as you can get as a linebacker", Carroll said. "I'm just glad I was one of the selected few to be here".

Griffin was named American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in his first year of starting at outside linebacker back in 2016.

Griffin used a prosthetic on his left arm to replace his amputated left hand and performed 20 repetitions of 225 pounds in the bench press. "Even though I've been doubted so long, it was always triggered in me to just do it and to prove all of them wrong".
