Fire at Trump Tower leaves 1 dead, 4 injured, says FDNY

Fire at Trump Tower leaves 1 dead, 4 injured, says FDNY

"It was a very hard fire, as you can imagine", Mr Nigro said outside the building in midtown Manhattan.

Officals confirmed that no members of the Trump family were in the building at the time of the disaster.

The Brooklyn home had sprinklers but they were turned off at the time of the blaze.

Still, Trump said at the time that he would spend $3 million to outfit Trump World's 370 units with sprinklers because it would make tenants feel safer, according to a New York Times article from the era.

Early talks for the proposed bill suggested that all residential buildings be required to install sprinklers, which irked developers, including Trump.

Tower houses Trump Organization headquarters and is one of the president's private residences.

A man who was in the apartment that caught fire was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries, officials said.

Even then, Trump admittedly failed to see the objective that sprinklers served in high-rise buildings like his own.

Three people had minor injuries in that instance. "The upper floors, the residence floors, are not sprinklered".

Then-New York city mayor and now staunch Trump ally Rudy Giuliani signed the costs needing sprinklers into force on March 24, 1999, having actually opposed it when it was first proposed in 1997.

President Trump was not in New York City this weekend.

An apartment fire in President Trump's commercial and residential skyscraper has left one man dead.

"The apartment was virtually entirely on fire", said Daniel Nigro, commissioner of the New York City Fire Department, to the New York Post.

Trump mirrored Nigro's remarks in a tweet that applauded firefighters, before news of the fatality surfaced.

Residents in their units on other floors at the time of the fire, however, hold a different view; multiple residents said there was no official evacuation notice.

"It was a very hard fire, as you can imagine", Nigro told reporters outside the building, in midtown Manhattan. Firemen (and women) did a great job.
