Danny Welbeck hits double and two sent off as Arsenal beat Southampton

Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal made life hard for themselves in the 3-2 victory over struggling Southampton on Sunday.

Long gave Southampton the lead after 17 minutes with a deft finish.

Long's last goal came against Crystal Palace in January where he also opened the lead before the Saints eventually went onto lose 2-1 at St. Mary's Stadium.

In Mkhitaryan's absence, Danny Welbeck scored twice to help Arsenal extend their winning streak to six games in all competitions by seeing off Southampton at the Emirates Stadium. "It's a disappointing result for Southampton today". With Hughes likely to continue his use of two main target-men on the pitch, he will now have to figure a way to get his new team into goal-scoring positions if Southampton's long-standing problem is to be solved.

But Welbeck got the victor with a powerful downward header ten minutes before the end to bag the win for Arsenal, in a game which saw late dismissals for Jack Stephens and Mohamed Elneny.

This was the clearest indication yet that Arsene Wenger is now prioritising the Europa League over the Premier League as he made seven changes from Thursday's win over CSKA Moscow, with Jack Wilshere and Mesut Ozil on the bench and Laurent Koscielny and Aaron Ramsey rested completely.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Saints almost pulled themselves level through Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who forced Petr Cech into a fine save with a low strike from the edge of the box.

Welbeck had just missed a sitter when he connected with the victor, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also scored for the Gunners. When Welbeck somehow contrived to scoop the ball over the bar from three yards soon after, Arsenal supporters must have feared their chance to win the game had gone.

"We knew it was going to be a competitive game, Southampton are in a hard position", said Welbeck.

Yet Welbeck did not dwell on that terrible miss and instead popped up at the back post to head home Alex Iwobi's cross in the 81st minute.

"I'm happy with the assist, glad to get the goals".

With Arsenal's players oozing confidence, both Ramsey and Lacazette added a second goal each to put Arsenal firmly in charge of the game.

And it was one of them who contributed heavily to the Saints' opening goal.
