Bus Bound For Masters Overturns On Highway; Driver Charged With DUI

Authorities have added felony charges against the driver of a charter bus that overturned on a Georgia interstate, injuring passengers heading to the Masters golf tournament. The bus driver was charged with driving under the influence, and troopers say his erratic driving had concerned the passengers even before the crash.

Around 8:45 a.m., an eastbound tour bus carrying 18 people to the Masters Tournament ran off the right side of the road, then over-corrected left and overturned in the median, according the GSP. There were 18 passengers on the bus according to the statement.

Officials at Augusta University Medical Center told KRDW they were treating seven people involved in the crash. He says some patients may require operations and added that none of the injuries appear to be life threatening.

The driver, 61-year-old Steven Hoppenbrouwer, of Gwinnett County, Georgia, was charged with DUI and failure to maintain lane, according to the state patrol.

It is not known at this time who was on the bus - or where they were from.

He said the interior of the bus matched a photo on the company's website showing colorful strip lighting, a single row of seats lining each side of the bus and cocktail glasses hanging over a bar. Just before noon ET, five were in serious condition and two were in fair condition, a spokeswoman at the hospital told the Chronicle.

All seven people being treated at AUMC are adults.

Plowman said that the bus careened off the road and spun around one and a half times before skidding on its negative a excellent distance.

Jet Executive Limosine owns the tour bus, GSP said.

The crash caused I-20 to shut down in both directions, but the interstate later reopened.
