Brandin Cooks Trade Sparked By Meeting At Coaching Clinic

Brandin Cooks Trade Sparked By Meeting At Coaching Clinic

Bill Belichick, once again, is leading the way.

With Cooks headed to Los Angeles and Danny Amendola in Miami, the Patriots have lost two of their top three receivers from last season, not to mention long-time starting left tackle Nate Solder (Giants). But he wasn't exactly the next coming of Randy Moss, circa 2007, in New England. This makes it more likely that one of those picks in the first three rounds will see a receiver heading to New England. New England now has the ammo to pair one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the National Football League with the game's best quarterback. In his previous three seasons with the Saints, Cooks had 2,861 yards and 20 touchdowns on 215 receptions. At 24, he's still quick and fast. New England, under Belichick, have never been the type of team to give up valuable, cost-controlled assets for star players.

Then again, the departure of Cooks means Julian Edelman, coming off a torn ACL, is now Brady's No. 1 weapon, and the MVP's lifeline, Danny Amendola, has also left this offseason. There's a good chance we can put all of that retirement talk to rest too, because the Patriots probably wouldn't have traded away such a productive offensive player if they were still uncertain about the future of their most productive offensive player. They tend to get dollar-on-the-dime production from pass-catchers who often include several running backs.

It has been reported that the Giants are asking for at least two first-round picks for Beckham, which would likely give any team pause.

Another possibility is to trade both their one's (23 & 31) to go up and get one of the top young signal callers in this years draft.

Garoppolo was not a top-of-the-draft quarterback.

Here's an exciting scenario: Belichick, armed now with extra picks, trades up for a quarterback to succeed Tom Brady, who'll be 41 in August. It is a draft filled with top quarterback prospects, from Sam Darnold of Southern California to Josh Rosen of UCLA to Josh Allen of Wyoming to polarizing Heisman Trophy victor Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma. Losing him in Super Bowl LII clearly didn't hurt. General Manager Les Snead will also have a decision to make about extending Ndamukong Suh as he was only signed to a one year contract.

Watkins was in the same contractual situation when the Rams acquired him from Buffalo during training camp a year ago, and he parlayed a solid season in Los Angeles into an enormous contract elsewhere. Cook joins a receiving corps that includes Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Tavon Austin, Josh Reynolds and Mike Thomas among others.

This trade undoubtedly brings back bad memories of last month's news when Watkins bolted from L.A. for a $48 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.
