Aseemanand acquitted of Mecca Masjid blast

Aseemanand acquitted of Mecca Masjid blast

A powerful blast, triggered by remote control, had ripped through the over four centuries-old mosque here during an assembly of devotees on May 18, 2007 when they had gathered for Friday prayers, killing nine people and wounding 58. He told television channels that accused in several cases were acquitted since the BJP-led government was formed at the Centre four years ago. A total of three chargesheets were filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the NIA in the sensational case. "The judge has orally complained to us that media is disturbing his privacy", the police officer said while asking the scribes to leave.

Judge Ravinder Reddy of the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court, who cited lack of evidence for the acquittals, gave no reason for his sudden resignation. However, the court in Hyderabad acquitted him in Mecca Masjid blast although the SIM cards used here were also used in Ajmer shrine blast.

The Jaipur court said the investigating agency had deduced that the RSS Parcharak had purchased the SIM cards, to time and trigger the bombs kept at Ajmer Dargah.

The NIA court on Monday said while acquitting the accused that the prosecution couldn't present clinching evidence against the accused.

The trial lasted 11 years, and 224 witnesses were examined out of who 64 turned "hostile".

Instead, the NIA continued to rely heavily on Aseemanand's confession, including his claim that Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad was bombed as a "lesson needed to be taught to Hyderabad since its Nizam had made a decision to leave India for Pakistan at the time of Independence".

A bitter war of words broke out between the BJP and the Congress soon after the Mecca Masjid blast case verdict on Monday. Aseemanand allegedly retracted the statement later. A majority of the witnessed turned hostile as the trial began. When the details of the case linking Aseemanand with the blasts surfaced, he went absconding only to be arrested in 2010 from Haridwar.

Even Sadhvi Pragya, who was granted bail by the Bombay High Court for the 2008 Malegaon blasts, called the entire investigation a Congress conspiracy against Hindus and nationalists.

The BJP leader noted that then home minister Shinde had used the term "saffron terror" and "Hindu terror" in his address at a 2013 Congress conclave in Jaipur in which then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were present.
