An Oklahoma teacher moved to San Antonio and her salary doubled

"I think the #MeToo movement has even really propelled us forward", she said.

Last month, state legislators increased teacher pay by an average of $6,100 and granted public schools with an additional $51 million in funding.

The Senate also voted to repeal a $5 per-night hotel/motel tax, which was a small part of that education budget package. With demands for statewide strikes spreading from Kentucky, Arizona and SC to Florida, Iowa and Texas, the unions have warned teachers that strikes are illegal and would lead to "harsh consequences". The governor also signed a bill to raise about $20.5 million requiring third-party online retailers to collect and remit sales tax back to state coffers.

Since early March, Arizona educators have swarmed the state Capitol in protest and threatened to walk out if Gov. Doug Ducey and the Legislature don't act on their demands for pay raises and the restoration of $1 billion in education funding cuts.

Oklahoma teachers carried their walkout over school funding and higher pay into a ninth day on Tuesday as a union leader declared that educators had the advantage of momentum in a battle with the Republican-dominated state legislature.

In one of the largest turnouts since the statewide strike by Oklahoma teachers began on April 2, thousands of educators and their supporters protested inside and outside the state capitol in Oklahoma City Monday, as the walkout by almost 40,000 teachers began its second week. Oklahoma teachers have been off the job for six school days-and counting.

Teachers from across the state shut down their schools and marched in the state's capital last week. "They were not looking forward to the walkout, but it's important".

"We are about 90 percent of the way to our year-one ask for education and, so, we're close", said Oklahoma Education Association president Alicia Priest. Teachers are not letting up when it comes to more money for education. Senators say they can make up that shortage through other revenue in the bill.

Classes remain canceled in Oklahoma's biggest school districts Tuesday as teachers walk out for a seventh day.

Oklahoma State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister on Monday extended the time period for students to take standardized tests in hopes of preventing the loss of federal money.
