Woman bumped from overbooked United flight walks away with $10K

An airline passenger who was bumped from an oversold flight saw her luck change when United gave her an offer she couldn't refuse: a voucher for a whopping $10,000.

For Allison Preiss, a communications director from Washington who began tweeting Thursday morning from Dulles International Airport after she was asked to deboard, her travel experience ended much better than it began. However, she was reportedly kept from boarding the flight because there was not room and she paid the lowest fare for her ticket. For a flight that THEY oversold.

While Preiss may have preferred cash, here are five trips she can now take - at no cost.

Interested in United Airlines?

Instead of giving Preiss a cash refund for the ordeal, United customer service employees awarded her a travel voucher worth up to $10,000. "Sketchy af", she wrote on Twitter.

The United Airlines terminal is viewed at Newark Liberty Airport on July 8, 2015 in Newark, New Jersey.

A spokesman for United Airlines confirmed on Friday that a passenger got the big voucher, but he didn't name the person. She was later told that she was bumped because there was a broken seat on the plane.

Eventually, United upped its offer to a $10,000 voucher, the maximum amount the company allows. United did not immediately say if any other passengers have received a $10,000 voucher.

Of course, it was also to be competitive: Delta Airlines had quickly capitalized on its rival's PR nightmare, raising its policy to include remissions of up to $9,950 shortly after the video went viral. "TEN THOUSAND", tweeted Preiss, along with a photo of the voucher.
