White House says "no immediate personnel changes at this time"

White House says

"Everybody's going to leave the White House sometime", McMaster said, laughing.

Kelly acknowledged to the reporters it's likely that Trump is talking to people outside the White House and that reporters are then talking to those people.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders, however, dismissed the reports and said that there were no changes at the National Security Council (NSC). Finally, investors continue to worry about the prospects for a trade war arising from President Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

While announcing Tillerson's ouster Tuesday, Trump told the media, "I'm really at a point where we're getting very close to having the cabinet and other things that I want". But a statement issued by Steven Goldstein, the undersecretary of State for public diplomacy, said that Tillerson learned the news from the president's tweet.

The Post report painted a picture of turmoil in the White House based on 19 anonymous interviews with presidential advisers and administration officials.

Several candidates have emerged as possible McMaster replacements, including John Bolton, a former United States ambassador to the UN and Keith Kellogg, the chief of staff of the National Security Council.

McMaster is Trumps second national security adviser after Michael Flynn was dismissed past year for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts with the Russian ambassador to the US. The conversations included discussions about Obama administration sanctions on Russian Federation for meddling in the 2016 campaign, something Flynn had denied. "He asked me to pass that message along to Gen. McMaster".

Trump had lashed out at McMaster in a late-night Twitter post last month. The president has complained that McMaster is too rigid and that his briefings go on too long and seem irrelevant.

The president and McMaster have disagreed on a number of issues - including the Iran deal and the USA approach to North Korea - and the national security adviser has also clashed with Kelly and Defense Secretary James Mattis, according to the officials.

Yet that candor, and McMaster's occasional slow-walking of Trump orders that the national security team thought ill-advised, made for some tense moments that provoked Trump to explode at McMaster.
