White House on lock-down as man shoots self

President Donald Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida at the time of the shooting.

The victim suffered a single gunshot wound, and Secret Service personnel did not fire any shots, Secret Service spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan said.

The White House was placed on lockdown and the surrounding area cordoned off by emergency personnel Saturday after an apparent gunshot was heard.

U.S. Secret Service responded to the sound of shots fired.

The incident is said to have affected traffic around the White House.

Law enforcement officers speak to witnesses after a security scare at the White House when a man apparently shot himself, according to a law enforcement source.

Bennett tweeted: "We're sheltering in place at the White House briefing room. Trying to learn more".

The District of Columbia Police Department said in a tweet that an "adult male has been declared deceased".

According to United States media, Trump has been briefed on the incident and is set to return later today.

Most recently, on February 23, a vehicle drove into a security barrier outside the building. "We are working to notify next of kin". None of those rounds appeared to have been aimed at the White House, the agency said.

"The President has been briefed".
