United to use tags for pet carriers after dog death

United Airlines, the carrier that endured harsh criticism previous year when a passenger was dragged from an overbooked flight, is under the gun again.

"I don't know if he's going to be able to sustain this flight, because he is a 10-year-old dog, and he's never been on a flight before", Mrs Swindle said.

United said that by next month, it would issue brightly coloured bag tags to passengers travelling with in-cabin pets to help flight attendants easily identify the animals.

"We tried, but there was a lot of turbulence and we weren't allowed to stand up", Sophia said. "She was saying verbally, 'My dog is in here, no, this is my dog.' The flight attendant, in response, really just continued to ask her to put it above because it was a hazard where it was, it was a safety emergency, someone could trip".

The Department of Transportation "is looking into the circumstances surrounding the recent death of a pet onboard a United Airlines flight", an agency spokesman said on Wednesday.

During the four-hour flight, the puppy barked for a while and then stopped.

The dog was in a small pet carrier created to fit under an airline seat.




United acknowledged Wednesday that the customer said there was a dog in the carrier. "Pets should never be placed in the overhead bin", it added. "We. express our deepest condolences". United denies the dog was intentionally put in the overhead bin.

This time the Chicago-based company is taking heat after it apologized for the death of a dog that was put - at the instruction of a flight attendant and in violation of airline policy - in an overhead compartment. Video of his rough treatment was shared widely online and in the media. "We were really anxious", Sophia said, according to NBC Chicago.

As Sophia and her mom cried, some shocked passengers tweeted and posted about the tragedy on Facebook.

Gremminger turned around and saw that the pet owner had collapsed to the floor, rocking back and forth while clutching the dog's body.

"She said that she did not know there was a dog in the bag, and if so she never would have instructed it to be put in the bin above", the passenger said.

"There were two people behind us who said they had the same dog, and they were like, 'You shouldn't do this.it's not common to do this, '" Sophia said.
