Tony Award Winner Cynthia Nixon Announces Candidacy for Governor of NY

Cynthia Nixon, the U.S. actress who shot to fame as workaholic lawyer Miranda on Sex and the City, jumped into the race for NY governor yesterday, unveiling a progressive platform championing economic equality and eschewing big business. "I've never lived anywhere else", Nixon says in a campaign video she posted on YouTube Monday afternoon.

Then, Nixon formally announced her candidacy with a tear-jerker of a campaign ad on Twitter, emphasizing the actress' progressive politics and long history in New York State.

The actress and liberal activist said in her campaign launch video: "I love NY".

Sixty percent of voters said they had no opinion of Nixon, who is still considering whether to run for her first political office.

"Basically, Governor Cuomo is shortchanging the children of New York State", she said while on The View past year. Cuomo's favorability rating stands at 52 percent, while 66 percent of those surveyed said they would vote for him over 19 percent who chose Nixon.

During an appearance on the Today show a year ago, she called out New York's current governor, Andrew Cuomo for inequities in school funding.

Nixon won Emmy Awards for her performances on Sex and the City and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. She married her wife Christine Marinoni in 2012 after dating for eight years and has one child with her. If elected, Nixon would be the first female governor of NY.

Ken Sunshine, a public relations consultant and a friend of Cuomo's, said he didn't see how Nixon could credibly challenge Cuomo from the left.

"Unlike Governor Cuomo, Cynthia Nixon rides the subway every day", it says on Nixon's website. It can't just be business as usual anymore. The general election takes place on 6 November. Another sign of her seriousness is the people who have signed on with her candidacy from the get-go.

Nixon enters a Democratic field that also includes Cuomo and former state senator Terry Gipson, of Rhinebeck, N.Y. Cynthia Nixon has jumped into the race for governor of NY.

A statement by Ms Nixon's campaign called her a progressive alternative to Mr Cuomo, referring to the governor as a centrist whose aides were mired in legal trouble.
