Tiger Woods eyes $1 million prize at PGA's Valspar Championship

Tiger Woods eyes $1 million prize at PGA's Valspar Championship

Conners shot a 3-under 68 on Saturday for a one-shot lead over Woods, Brandt Snedeker and Justin Rose as he goes after his first PGA Tour victory before a crowd rarely seen this side of a major. He birdied Nos. 12 and 13, sinking six-foot putts on each, then drained an 11-footer for another birdie on the par-4 second hole.

Indeed, there is 17 players within five shots of the lead including Scotland's Russell Knox who joined Rose and past Masters champion, Adam Scott in shooting a round of 66.

And no matter how this event ends for him, Woods leading a golf tournament just four events and 12 rounds into a never-assured comeback is a surprise, even for him. He'll play out of the penultimate twosome again in Round 4 with Woods. And probably the most important round I played so far, hung in there and stuck with it.

The 42-year-old's last tour win was in August, 2013, at the World Golf Championship Bridgestone Invitational. Sitting at 6-under, just one shot back of the lead in the middle of Saturday's Round 3, Tiger grabbed an iron, stood over the ball and ... behind him the iPhones were out in full force. "Wasn't really too anxious about what was going on around me". "Funny, in golf it feels like a long time ago I last won".

"We were semi-joking back at the house that I hit so many good chips that haven't gone in yet, " Woods said.

The crowd around nine went nuts, Tiger calmly pumped his fist and moved onto 10 with a share of the lead.

"I've played myself right there into contention so it should be a fun Sunday", he said.

Lowry was two over after seven holes but the first of three birdies came at the eighth hole and he added gains at the 11th and 15th holes.

Impressively, Woods displayed an assortment of shots off the tee on Saturday.

"The roars are a little louder, and there's certainly an energy about the gallery that you don't have anywhere else", Jordan Spieth said. "That was nice. It was nice to get the momentum, keep the momentum going".

"I am only one back and as I said it is a bunched leaderboard and I have a shot at victory tomorrow".

It seemed he did a pretty good job of it on Friday, leading by himself for a time and making many wonder how it is even possible. Kind of what I work for and everybody works for out here.
