Shoe memorial outside US Capitol represents children killed by gun violence

Shoe memorial outside US Capitol represents children killed by gun violence

Thousands of pairs of shoes were placed on the lawn in front of the US Capitol on Tuesday to mark every child who has been killed due to gun violence since the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.

"Shoes from family members of victims as well celebrities and citizens across the country will be displayed from early morning", Avaaz wrote in a press release.

The 7,000 pairs were laid out near Congress by activists calling for an end to gun violence.

Students across the nation will walk out of class on the one-month anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida. "The majority of Americans want a change in gun laws, and a majority of gun owners want change", said Emma Ruby-Sachs, deputy director of Avaaz, as cited by Reuters.

"The display wasn't limited to the shoes, as around it protesters held signs with messages like "#NOTONEMORE" and "7,000 KIDS KILLED". Leading up to the march, spokesman for Avaaz told NBC affiliate News4 they're demanding Congress pay attention to the lives impacted by gun violence.

Tom Mauser came wearing the same shoes his son wore the day he died. The figure used by Avaaz would amount to approximately 6,825 children killed by guns in that time period.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports almost 13 hundred U.S. Children under the age of 17 are killed by guns every year.

The display feature 7,000 pairs of shoes.

Sneakers on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. "I discovered that after he died and that became a big symbol for me, that I could walk in his shoes", said Mauser, who has since become an advocate for stricter gun control.

Today marks the one-month anniversary of the Parkland shootings, prompting school walkouts across the country in solidarity.
