Roger Federer praises Juan Martin del Potro after Indian Wells final loss

Roger Federer praises Juan Martin del Potro after Indian Wells final loss

Argentine tennis player Juan Martin del Potro ended the unbeaten run of Swiss Marvel Roger Federer in 2018 on Sunday by outclassing the World No in an enchanting final at the BNP Paribas Open.

Federer had been searching for a record sixth title in California, but it was Del Potro who powered to his first ATP Masters 1000 title.

"Should I have won the US Open final I don't know", Federer said.

"I had very bad moments a few years ago and I don't want to think about that anymore".

"I have everything that I want, and I want to keep improving my game to see what can I do", he said.

"I'm still shaking, I'm so nervous", del Potro told ESPN on court after the match. I mean, everybody knows I was really close to quit tennis before my third surgery on my left wrist.

"But what's interesting is that he put himself out there with no double-hander nearly, but just happy to slice and still take losses, I guess, you know, because he knew it was going to probably not be enough against some players, but he was happy enough playing this way, which I admire a lot".

The 1.98m Argentinian with the big forehand endured years of injury-induced heartbreak but was at the top of his game in the Californian desert, beating world No. 1 Roger Federer 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-2) in an enthralling final.

Del Potro saved three match points in the deciding set in Indian Wells as the Swiss great failed to serve out for his 18th consecutive win at the start of 2018.

Del Potro was competing in his first Indian Wells final since 2013 when he lost to Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

How did Del Potro beat Federer again?

"Juan Martín was a bit better at the end", said Federer, the defending champion who has won this tournament five times.

He failed to break the dominance of Federer, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray in the years following, though, and a string of career-threatening wrist injuries hampered his game and nearly forced him to give up on tennis. Fans all over the world that tuned in to watch this instant classic will no doubt enjoy discussing the extended, bruising baseline exchanges from these two heavy hitters.

The win would ensure Del Potro climbs into the top 10 when the next rankings are released. "I never miss that forehand". To return after missing so much tennis requires fitness and sharpness to be rebuilt, and after 2014 for del Potro to rebuild his backhand. He said Sunday he won't decide whether to play in the French Open until after he plays Miami.

Federer's five Indian Wells titles included previous year, when he beat fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka.

Del Potro recovered to deuce with a forehand victor.

It was Del Potro's seventh victory over Federer in 25 career meetings, one of those wins coming in the 2009 US Open final.
