Of-its-kind, at-home test aims to increase early breast cancer detection

Of-its-kind, at-home test aims to increase early breast cancer detection

The decision expands the Company's Personal Genome Genetic Health Risk (GHR) Report to now detect these breast cancer mutations. It is important to note that the test only detects 3 out of the more than 1,000 known breast cancer mutations. The patient simply takes a sample of his or her own saliva and tests it. These three mutations, however, are not the most common BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations in the general population.

This approval is expected to raise concerns over whether or not people should ask for professional medical help, as this information may not be appropriately handled by everyone, cancer experts said.

In a reversal of fortune for 23andMe, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted the company the first-ever authorization for direct-to-consumer genetic testing for cancer risk without a prescription.

It doesn't find all cancer-causing genes - not by a long shot, the FDA said.

"While the detection of a BRCA mutation on this test does indicate an increased risk, only a small percentage of Americans carry one of these three mutations and most BRCA mutations that increase an individual's risk are not detected by this test", St. Pierre added. "The variants may also be associated with an increased risk for certain other cancers".

23andMe founder and CEO Anne Wojcikci acknowledged that most cancer is not hereditary and that this test does not cover many variants tied to an even higher cancer risk.

The 23andMe test searches for the three DNA mutations that are found most commonly in people of Jewish descent.

The test should also not be used by consumers or health care providers to decide on any treatments, including anti-hormone therapies and preventive removal of breasts or ovaries. For this reason, a negative test result could still mean that a person has an increased risk of cancer due to gene mutations.

Additionally, the FDA says that this test should not substitute for a doctor visit because it doesn't account for every possible outcome. The agency also outlined special controls created to assure test's accuracy and reliability.
