Odds on White Easter with widespread alerts in force for snow disruption

Odds on White Easter with widespread alerts in force for snow disruption

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the risk of heavy snow throughout Monday, April 2.

The chief forecaster's assessment said: "As a weather system moves in from the south and comes up against cold air over the United Kingdom, there is a chance rain could turn to heavy snow in places".

Thursday will see a three-way split, with showery rain pushing in from south-west England, rain across the far north east of Scotland falling as snow over the hills, and a large amount of fine weather in between.

Strong winds will whip up deep snow drifts with several inches of the white stuff now expected to blanket swathes of the country.

"Where there are impacts from this they could be significant and we could see snow to low levels for a time".

The weather warning for Easter Monday will come into play shortly after midnight and remain in place for much of the day.

Power cuts are also possible in rural areas.

The weather for the long-awaited Easter getaway is to be a mixed bag of sunshine, showers and snow.

By Easter Monday cold air will once again be feeding in from the east and this is when forecasters much of the northern half of the United Kingdom could see snow.

There's a slight chance of snow showers before the morning commute Friday, then a chance of rain showers after lunch. Expect mostly rain south and mostly snow north along the ND border. More prolonged rain is possible in northern England.

The chance for precipitation is 60 percent during the day and 70 percent over night. That will allow a mix of clouds and sun to warm us only to the 30s and 40s, or about 5-10 degrees below late March averages in most places. A cold front will move through in the evening and will transition to all snow. Showers or some longer spells of rain and hill snow.
