NASA, ULA Launch Advanced NOAA Weather Satellite

The GOES-S satellite is equipped with Earth and Sun monitoring equipment for the needs of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Survey.

It is the second high-definition satellite used for the goal of tracking weather over the US, with GOES-R having launched in 2016, Weather.com reported.

It is noted that the satellite will work in tandem with GOES-R, which was successfully launched in November of 2016. GOES-17 will extend observational high-resolution satellite coverage utilizing the revolutionary new technology aboard GOES-16 to most of the Western Hemisphere, from the west coast of Africa to New Zealand, and from near the Arctic Circle to near the Antarctic Circle.

The primary customer for the data from the GOES satellites is the US Weather Service, but the information they beam to Earth is also shared openly with meteorologists around the world, NOAA said. GOES-16 also observed the uncertain path of Hurricanes Irma and the rapidly intensifying Hurricane Maria in September.

Stephen Volz, director for satellite and information services at NOAA, said GOES-R has "revolutionized" the way people view weather and environmental information and the entire constellation presents "a quantum leap above" prior generations.

News Brief: A next-generation GOES-S weather satellite, the second of its kind, rose into orbit at 2:02 p.m. PT (5:02 p.m. ET) today from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket. 'It allows the researchers to see the dynamics in a way that just looking at numbers just doesn't reveal - the visual impact is remarkable'.

That breadth will help researchers and weather forecasters get a better picture of weather that makes landfall in the western USA - weather that often has origins far out to sea, beyond GOES-16's view.

"For the first time, space-based observations from geostationary satellites and ground-based observations such as Doppler weather radars are in cadence with each other, providing the ability to create a top-to-bottom, linked profile of a severe thunderstorm through direct observation", Calhoun added.

Even as it was still being checked in orbit, GOES-16 provided invaluable data to firefighters battling blazes in Texas, Oklahoma and elsewhere last March and to Houston-area rescue teams in the flooded aftermath of Hurricane Harvey last August, according to officials.

The satellite will also be able to track atmospheric rivers, which can bring flooding rains and heavy snowfall to western states, Weather.com reported. GOES-T is expected to launch in the 2020 timeframe and GOES-U will follow suit around 2024.

NOAA funds, manages and plans to operate the GOES-R Series satellites.
