Miley sued for $300m over We Can't Stop

Compare Cyrus' We Can't Stop above to Flourgon's We Run Things below.

According to legal documents obtained by ABC News, Caribbean songwriter Michael May, who performs under the name Flourgon, has sued the singer in NY federal court.

Singer Miley Cyrus performs during the 2018 MusiCares Person of the Year show honoring Fleetwood Mac at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan, New York, U.S., January 26, 2018.

One of the biggest names in dancehall during the 1980s, Flourgon made a name with songs like We Run Things, Bounce, Big Batty Gal and Love Mi Lover Bad.

The suit claims the Jamaica-based songwriter, along with artist Michael May, wrote a song titled "We Run Things" back in 1988.

Now: "We Run Things", which is a great song, sounds absolutely nothing like "We Can't Stop", which is not.

In the court documents, May notes he won "formal copyright protection" in November with the US Copyright Office for all musical arrangements in his song.

The suit does not specify how much cash May is seeking from Cyrus, 25, but a statement from his lawyers to the News claims he wants $300 million, as well as a trial by jury and for the singer to quit profiting from "We Can't Stop".

"[Cyrus' song] owes the basis of its chart-topping popularity to and its highly-lucrative success to plaintiff May's protected, unique, creative and original content", the lawsuit stated, according to Reuters.

It comes after Miley suggested she changed the cultural landscape with her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in 2013.
