McMaster Brushes Off Question On Reports He's Leaving Administration

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Mr. Kelly spoke with White House staff and assured them that there were "no immediate personnel changes at this time". The chief of staff tried for months to keep the secretary of state in his post, The New York Times reported, and fumed at his dismissal.

Instead, Sanders said the White House should be focused on their jobs and in doing the "best job we can".

But the president is privately weighing more changes, expressing frustration with certain advisers and considering possible replacements.

Sanders looked to tamp down the possibility of McMaster leaving the White House, though, telling reporters that she spoke directly to Trump about the national security advisers' standing. Kelly has also worn on the president, confidants of the president said.

Kelly reportedly told the group that Tillerson, who had contracted a stomach bug during an African diplomatic trip, was using a toilet when the chief of staff told him the news.

Michael Flynn, a retired general, entered the White House with a cloud over him - he had been fired by Barack Obama as defense intelligence chief. That followed the announcement that National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn is stepping down.

Kelly is routinely touted as one of the more mature members of Trump's top brass and has often been branded as one of the "adults" in charge.

In private conversations in recent weeks, Trump has reflected on his desire to reshape the administration.

The president himself has said in recent days that there will always be change in his administration, and that he's still contemplating more moves.

The feeling of unease has been pervasive, though, with one White House official acknowledging "the scariest part about working here" is that no one ever knows what's going to happen or who will be next. Officials said McMaster has been sidelined in some internal discussions, with Kelly taking on a more active role in foreign policy decisions, because of the personal tensions.

Trump chafes at McMaster's demeanor, complaining that his aide lectures him, according to three current and former administration officials.

Seeking to tamp down the anxiety inside the West Wing and the sense of never-ending dysfunction, President Donald Trump refrained from dawn through dusk from any firings-by-tweet.
