Kremlin says no interest in U.S. arms race in 'invincible weapons' row

Kremlin says no interest in U.S. arms race in 'invincible weapons' row

Putin said in an interview with NBC News' Megyn Kelly that he can not know whether Russian law was violated and would need to "first see what they've done". Kelly asked, referring to Russia's campaign to interfere in the 2016 United States election.

Putin, speaking ahead of an election on March 18 that polls indicate he should win easily, said in his speech that new Russian technology would render such defences "ineffective". "Give us materials, give us information". Nobody listened to us. "People who are well educated must understand that we in Russia can not prosecute people if they have not violated Russian law".

Instead, all Russian officials are now insisting the talk of nuclear weapons was "non-militaristic", and that Putin was simply trying to emphasize that Russia retained "parity" with America's own massive nuclear arsenal. "We consider them illegal and harmful to the people of both countries and the entire world", Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters in a daily briefing. "Give us a document".

Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller last month indicted 13 Russians.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded to Putin's speech by stating, "President Putin has confirmed what the United States government has known all along, which Russian Federation has denied: Russia's been developing destabilizing weapons systems for over a decade, in direct violation of its treaty obligations".

Kelly, who worked as a corporate lawyer before pursuing a career in journalism, said she did have a law degree.

While the U.S. is now going through extradition proceedings, it's highly unlikely the Russian government will agree to give up the defendants, in part, because they were acting on orders from the highest ranks.
