Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law, has security clearance downgraded

Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law, has security clearance downgraded

The real estate company owned by the family of White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, who also happens to be President Donald Trump's son-in-law, received more than $500 million in loans a year ago after executives from the lending companies met with Kushner at the White House.

Apollo spokesman Charles Zehren told the paper Harris was not involved in the decision to loan money to Kushner Cos. $184 million in November, months after Kushner met with Apollo founder Joshua Harris and discussed a possible job in the White House for him, the Times reported.

Citigroup in the spring of 2017 also lent Kushner Companies money totaling $325 million. White House National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster has reportedly asked Kushner to explain meetings he has had with foreign officials without notifying the National Security Council.

The report comes one day after Kushner's White House security clearance was downgraded, cutting off his access to top secret intelligence.

But Kushner Companies' spokeswoman said they'd received no letter from the state and called the inquiries "harassment exclusively for political reasons". The Apollo loan was triple the size of the average Apollo property loan, the Times says. She described Kushner Cos as a "multibillion enterprise that is extremely financially strong".

Peter Mirijanian, a spokesman for Kushner's lawyer Abbe Lowell, said Kushner has had no role in Kushner Cos since joining the government.

Two sources, who could not speak on the record because the status of security clearances is classified, confirmed United States media reports that the 37-year-old White House aide will no longer be able to access America's most closely guarded secrets.

Perhaps if Kushner weren't so politically motivated himself, he wouldn't have to worry about having his potential conflicts of interest scrutinized.

Deutsche Bank received a grand-jury subpoena from prosecutors for information regarding that loan around the same time, according to a person familiar with the matter.

A Citigroup spokeswoman said the firm's relationship with Kushner Companies was not connected to Kushner's White House role.

Kushner has been forced to repeatedly correct omissions in his "SF-86", the government-wide form used to apply for clearances, as well as his financial disclosure forms, which experts said could delay or even end his chances of earning a clearance through the normal process.

Taylor, of Kushner Cos, told the Times "stories like these attempt to make insinuating connections that do not exist to disparage the financial institutions and companies involved".

Although Kushner stepped down as the company's CEO in 2017, after Trump was sworn in to the office, the business still remains in his family and reports suggest he is still invested in the company's business dealings.

Trump could simply grant a waiver for Kushner to receive a high-level security clearance despite the unresolved background investigation.

And spokespeople for both companies asserted the loans granted to Kushner Companies were unrelated to the meetings.

The couple sold off some of their assets before starting their White House jobs past year, but Kushner still has stake in hundreds of companies.

Federal ethics regulations restrict government employees from participating in some matters that involve companies with which the official is seeking "a business, contractual or other financial relationship that involves other than a routine consumer transaction".
