GOP Candidate Struggling In Trump Country, So He'll Get A Presidential Boost

In a light-hearted moment, Trump mentioned that columnist Peggy Noonan said he wasn't presidential in his speeches.

While Trump was ostensibly in Pennsylvania for Saccone, the rally was as much about the president as it was an underperforming congressional candidate.

He's a vocal supporter of Trump's plan to implement tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum, and the Republicans' 2017 Tax Act, which, perhaps most notably, slashed the corporate tax rate to 21% from 35%.

Polls show Saccone is in a close race against Democrat Conor Lamb. He called Mr. Lamb "smart" for backing the Trump administration's punitive tariffs on foreign steel, a policy the president called "my baby".

In addition to the coming special election, Trump looked back to the 2016 election where he derided a speech made by Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA - whom he called "Pocahontas" - on behalf of Hillary Clinton for being "so angry".

The crowd seemed to relish the president's speech, and Mr. Trump himself appeared to enjoy the setting.

TRUMP: Then I get up in the morning. Although the Democratic candidate supports the steel tariffs and has taken other conservative positions, Trump said he is "weak" on crime and immigration, and would vote the Democratic line in Congress in order to thwart the Trump agenda.

"These people are killing our kids and they're killing our families, and we have to do something", he said. "Wouldn't we love to run against Oprah?" White House officials said Trump has privately expressed interest in Singapore's policy of executing drug dealers. And on the topic of worldwide trade, Trump faulted his predecessors all the way back to President Ronald Reagan, who held office for most of the 1980s, for what he sees as the current unfairness in the country's trade relations with much of the rest of the world.

"The only way to solve the drug problem is through toughness", Trump said.

He called an African-American congresswoman a "very low-IQ individual" and bashed the moderator of NBC's "Meet the Press" as a "sleeping son of a bitch".

For his part, Saccone was thrilled to have the president's help. His new slogan will be "Keep America great!" with an exclamation point.

Trump conceded Lamb might not back Pelosi but said most Democrats will.

In one of the rally's more surreal moments, the president actually provided the crowd with an extended, almost two-minute impression of being presidential that mocked the more straight-laced style of previous presidents and suggested that Trump's looser style is more entertaining.

'Steel is back. And aluminum is back, ' President Trump boasted during a campaign rally in suburban Pittsburgh for Republican Congressional candidate Rick Saccone.

"We have to build a wall", Trump said.

Trump, who last week agreed to a historic one-on-one meeting with Kim, motioned with his arms for the crowd to calm.

Before Saturday night's rally, Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter about his upcoming talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. "Are you with me on that?"

DETROW: So rallying with Rick Saccone in a big airplane hanger, Trump put the Trump twist on the presidency. "If the Democrats were to prevail in western Pennsylvania, that would be quite an quake", Rep. Charlie Dent said last week. "They're going to take away your 2nd Amendment rights", Trump said.

He said that, for the first two hours, his coverage was "unbelievable". "I don't know if this country is ready but I think it's a discussion we have to start thinking about".
