Google launches first Android P developer preview

Google launches first Android P developer preview

That means, for the third year in a row, Google is making a developer preview for the next version of Android available in March - months ahead of a consumer release in the autumn. The RTT APIs will make use of WiFi access points that are operating with the 802.11mc protocol to triangulate a position to within 1 to 2 meters.

In addition, the preview adds a new Bluetooth API to allow applications to take control of the device pairing and connection process. This should help apps do better indoor mapping, something that Google's been working on in Maps for years now. Carriers can report networks as being congested or unmetered and JobScheduler then manages work according to the network status. The latest update brings those features across Android devices.

So far, some features on the Android P seem to emulate quite a bit from Apple, such as the bubble-like notifications look borrowed from iOS and notch support for all the newly announced Android devices that have been copying the look iPhone X made mainstream.

Google released the first developer preview of Android P today, and obviously, people are starting to tear the update to shreds to figure out all its secrets and port features to other versions of Android because fragmentation. The added acceleration via Qualcomm's Hexagon DSP "Vector eXtensions" should significantly improve performance for developers as well. Android P also continues Android's steady improvements for the Autofill Framework and power efficiency (via Doze, App Standby and Background Limits). Along with key bugfixes, this release includes new APIs that allow password managers to improve the Autofill user experience, such as better dataset filtering, input sanitization, and compatibility mode. See all the details on what's new here.

Google will also restrict access to private APIs in Android.

Open Mobile API for NFC payments and secure transactions: Apps can use the OMAPI API to access secure elements (SE) to enable smart-card payments and other secure services. Final APIs will follow in preview 3 in June, with the next two builds being release candidates in June and July.
