Finland tops ranking of countries with happiest population, immigrants

Finland tops ranking of countries with happiest population, immigrants

The UN report devotes a special chapter to why the United States, once towards the top of happiness table, has slipped down the league despite having among the highest income per capita.

According to the report, "The overall rankings of country happiness are based on the pooled results from Gallup World Poll surveys from 2015-2017, and show both change and stability".

Finland has been named the happiest country in The World Happiness Report 2018, which ranks 156 countries on the wellbeing levels of their residents. There is a new top ranking country, Finland, but the top ten positions are held by the same countries as in the last two years, although with some swapping of places. "Yes, we have many things that make me happy".

The war-torn Syria is unsurprisingly near the bottom of the list, although there are several other countries that are even less happy, including Rwanda, Yemen and South Sudan. Egyptian Nourhan Maher said: "Only in the UAE can you leave your bag temporarily in a coffee shop and come back to find it". The GHC is a global network of independent thought leaders and academic specialists in happiness and key practitioners in areas ranging from psychology, economics, urban planning, civil society, business and government.

Europe's Nordic nations, none particularly diverse, have dominated the index since it first was produced in 2012.

Finland took top honours in that category too, giving the country a statistical double-gold status.

For the first time, the happiness report, launched by the United Nations launched in 2012, includes a section on the happiness of immigrants in each country.

Wiking from the Happiness Research Institute said the U.S. had also seen declining "trust, generosity and social support, and those are some of the factors that explain why some countries are happier than others".

'Briefly put, (Nordic countries) are good at converting wealth into well-being, ' Wiking said.

"The most striking finding of the report is the remarkable consistency between the happiness of immigrants and the locally born", said report co-author John Helliwell in a news release.

The primary reasons for our high levels of wellbeing are the country's GDP, a healthy life expectancy and strong social support available for Kiwis. "The signs are not good for the U.S. It is getting richer and richer but not getting happier", he said. Germany came in 15th place, while the United Kingdom was 19th. During the winter months, the sun doesn't rise at all for 51 days in Lapland, northern Finland.
